MANCHESTER, England -- England defender Luke Shaw became the worlds most expensive teenage player on Friday and Manchester Uniteds second signing in 24 hours following its worst English Premier League campaign. Stan Smith Clearance . The 18-year-old left back joined United from Southampton, reportedly for more than 27 million pounds ($46 million), straight after returning from his first World Cup with England. Southampton confirmed the deal made Shaw "the most expensive teenager ever," which would eclipse fees of around 26 million pounds ($44 million) that saw Wayne Rooney join Manchester United in 2004 and Marquinhos sign for Paris Saint-Germain last year. Shaw signed a four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year if he continues to develop as one of the most exciting youngsters in football. "I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that," Shaw said in a statement. Louis van Gaal doesnt officially take charge at United until his World Cup campaign as Netherlands manager is over, but players are being signed ready for the Dutchmans arrival. United paid around $50 million for Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera the day before Shaws arrival. The record 20-time English champions are spending early in the summer transfer window after dithering last year in the post-Alex Ferguson era led to an alarming, and costly, slump on the pitch. David Moyes was fired just before the season ended with United going from 2013 champions to seventh-place finishers last month. Uniteds management has convinced Shaw to join them despite the lack of Champions League football next season. Having already made 67 first-team appearances at Southampton, Shaw will be hoping he isnt just the backup to 33-year-old Patrice Evra at left back. "Luke is a very talented young left back with great potential," assistant manager Ryan Giggs said. "He has developed immensely during his time at Southampton." Shaw usurped Ashley Cole as backup to Leighton Baines in the England World Cup squad, leading to the Chelsea veterans international retirement. Shaw, who made his international debut only in March, won his third cap in Tuesdays 0-0 draw with Costa Rica before Englands early exit from Brazil. Shaw is the latest departure from Southampton since the south-coast club achieved its highest-ever Premier League points tally to finish eighth in May. Manager Mauricio Pochettino left for Tottenham, striker Rickie Lambert joined Liverpool, and midfielder Adam Lallana is also set for a move to Anfield. Cheap Stan Smith China Wholesale . The 31-year-old Spain midfielder hasnt played since Madrid lost in the Copa del Rey final to Atletico Madrid in May due to back and foot injuries. Kane got tangled up along the boards with Anthony Peluso, and Peluso appeared to fall on Kanes right leg. Kane was seen holding his leg in pain and he was helped off the ice. Coach Claude Noel described the injury as a ";tweak," but said Kane is listed as day-to-day until they have him assessed and find out the seriousness. Cheap Stan Smith Free Shipping. Kane has been one of the most energetic members of Winnipegs offence in their first seven games of the season, with three goals and two assists. ASHBURN, Va. Cheap Air Jordan 13 Sale . -- Mike Shanahan gave Robert Griffin III a rest, and may have turned up the pressure on himself, too. The Redskins coach announced Wednesday that he was benching the star quarterback for the rest of the season. Kirk Cousins will start, and Griffin will be the inactive No. 3 quarterback behind Rex Grossman. Shanahan said he is benching Griffin to keep the quarterback healthy for the off-season, pointing out the 24 sacks and other hits Griffin has taken over the last five games. He said he ran the idea by owner Dan Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen, and that both offered their support. "Youve got to take a look at the risk and reward," Shanahan said. "And with Robert I thought that his hits were piling up on him, giving him his toll, and I was afraid that we would set him back." Shanahan cited the need for Griffin to have a full off-season of development after missing this years workouts while rehabbing from knee surgery. But theres no certainty that Shanahan will be around to coach in the off-season: The Redskins have lost five straight and are 3-10, their third losing season in Shanahans four years in Washington. "I think anytime you have a year left on your contract and you have three wins, thats going to be out there," Shanahan said Griffin was clearly unhappy with Shanahans move. "I expressed my desire to play," Griffin said. "Of course I want to be out there and finish the season with my guys, see it through. He explained to me his reasoning, and at the end of the day Coachs decision is what we go with it." Cousins took the first-team snaps as the team worked out in the indoor practice bubble to prepare for Sundays game against the Atlanta Falcons. Players say Griffin ran the scout team. The benching is the latest twist in a Shanahan-Griffin relationship that has been bordering on contentious since a playoff loss to Seattle last season, when Griffin remained in the game even though he was clearly injured. Shanahan conceded for the first time Wednesday that continuing to play Griffin "cost us the game." Griffin had reconstructive knee surgery a few days later and missed vital months of developmental work before returning for Week 1 in September, but he hasnt been the same player that won the leagues Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012. With defences taking away the read-option, he has struggled as a drop-back passer, ranking 26th in the NFL in passer rating with 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. However, while Griffin hasnt had the same explosiveness, both he and Shanahan have insisted that the quarterback is medically healthy. Until this week, Shanahan publicly quashed any suggestions about a possible switch, saying Griffin needs as much game experience as possible. Shanahan said Wednesday that he first brought up the idea of benching Griffin last week in a conversation with Snyder, having decided that risk of injury outweighed the reward of experience. Both Griffin and Cousins are second-year players. Cousins played in all or part of four games, including the playoff loss, last season because of various Griffin injuries. Grossman hasnt taken a regular season snap since 2011. In recent days, the open question has been whether Shanahan might resign -- and thus forfeit a years salary -- or wait to be fired at the end of the season. Theres also the possibility he and Snyder could negotiate a settlement, and that the benching of a healthy franchise player could in some way be Shanahans way of getting some leverage in those talks. "Somebody said, Hey, the reason why youre going with Kirk is youre trying to get fired and get a year left on your contract," Shanahan said. "If I want to try to get fired, Im not going to call up Dan Snyder and ask his opinion on a player (when) I dont have to. And if he says no, Im not going to go in that direction." But Shanahan again conceded he might not return for a fifth season. "I dont know until I sit down with Dan," Shanahan said. "Then well find out what I think. Ill give him my opinions, and hell give me his opinions. Maybe we just hit it off and everything and I get that 12-, 15-year contract." "Well, maybe three-year," he added with a smile. "Whatever it is. Thats where grown men talk at the end of the year and you find out, Hey, whats the best way to go." The senior threw for 319 yards and no interceptions in his final college game, leading No. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Free-agent linebacker Brandon Spikes agreed to a one-year deal with the Buffalo Bills on Friday night. The Bills also said they reached terms with former San Francisco running back Anthony Dixon. Spikes had 86 tackles and an interception last season for New England, the former Florida players fourth with the Patriots. "Gotta silence the lambs, get on my Buffalo Bill! (hashtag)51 (hashtag)BILLSMAFIA taking back the (hashtag)AFCEAST (hashtag)PoWwWwW," Spikes tweeted. Hes rejoining former Patriots linebackers coach Pepper Johnson, the Bills new defensive line coach. Dixon ran for 458 yards and eight touchdowns in four seasons San Francisco, but dropped down the depth chart behind Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter. Dixon played some at fullback after Bruce Miller was injured. Bills general manager Doug Whaley has been busy, also adding linebacker Keith Rivers, guard Chris Williams and cornerback Corey Graham and re-signing tight end Scott Chandler. Air Jordan 13 Discount. Spikes is regarded as a key addition for a defence that struggled against the run last season and is under transition with Jim Schwartz taking over as co-ordinator. Schwartz replaces Mike Pettine, who left Buffalo after one season to take over as Clevelands head coach. The deal with Spikes will allow the Bills to move Kiko Alonso to an outside role, a position they believe hes best suited. Buffalo allowed 150 or more yards on the ground seven times last season. That was a glaring weakness of a defence that otherwise was solid in other areas in setting a franchise-record 57 sacks and finishing 10th in the NFL in yards allowed, Buffalos best finish since ranking second in 2004. TORONTO -- While most see Chivas USA as a team with no future and not much of a present, Toronto FC sees a squad playing for both pride and future MLS employment. Chivas, which stands last in the West with a 6-16-6 record, is currently in limbo as it prepares for a Sunday date in Toronto. The Los Angeles-based side has been taken over by the league and commissioner Don Garber says the team might not play in 2015 and perhaps longer, with the timing to be decided after a new owner takes over. And nobody seems to care. The Goats are floundering in near obscurity, averaging 6,942 fans per game. Thats by far the leagues worst attendance -- almost 12,000 under the MLS average -- but still a number that reportedly flatters the fans actually in attendance at the StubHub Center. "Its very hard to get ourselves motivated in a way," acknowledged Chivas midfielder Eric Avila, who spent 1 1/2 seasons at Toronto FC. "Even though we appreciate whoever comes out (for home games), its very difficult." "We havent really heard much," he added. "We know that theres a lot of meetings going on. And thats all they tell us. The guys are just trying to stick together and trying to finish out the season strong." The next challenge comes at BMO Field against a Toronto FC side struggling to reverse a slide of its own. Toronto manager Greg Vanney, a former Chivas assistant coach looking for his first win at the Toronto helm after two losses and a tie, says the uncertainty at Chivas can be a powerful motivator. "When that happens you have 20-something guys who are trying to figure out what their future looks like and they may have something to prove for each of them individually," he said. "It makes them very unpredictable." Added Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley: "Knowing some of their players, knowing their coach (Wilmer Cabrera) a little bit, they will still be a team thats going to be committed and fighting until the very end." At least Avila knows where his future lies. A transfer to Mexicos Santos Laguna is nearing completion. The Chivas numbers are remarkably bleak. The team has lost five straight and given up three or more goals in four of those contests. It is winless in 10 (0-9-1), during which time it has been outscored 24-3. It ranks worst in the league in goals, assists, shots and shots on goal. Chivas has scored just 23 goals with 14 of those coming from Mexican international striker Erick Torres, who is suspended for the Toronto game. Midfielders Marvin Chavez and Marco Delgado are next on the Chivas scoring list with two goals apiece. Of course, the Toronto picture isnt much better. Toronto (9-11-7) is winless in six (0-4-2) and has won just three of its last 16 (3-7-6). Its worth noting that Chivas record over the same period is 4-10-2. While Chivas has nothing to lose, Toronto FC needs a win to stop a six-game winless streak and painful slide down tthe Eastern Conference standings. Cheap Jerseys Authentic. A Toronto loss coupled with a Houston win over Philadelphia would drop TFC to eighth place. And wins by teams above would then widen the gap between Toronto and the five playoff berths available in the East. Vanney can look forward this weekend to the possible return of defender/captain Steven Cadwell (quad) and midfielder Jonathan Osorio (hamstring). Midfielder Collen Warner (hamstring) is listed as unavailable. There is also some light at the end of the Jermain Defoe tunnel with the England striker, who has been nursing a groin injury back in England, expected back at the club Monday. Still Vanney says Defoe, who leads the team with 11 goals despite missing 11 games through injury or suspension, may not see action until the Oct. 4 game in Los Angeles. A win would be timely for Toronto, which plans Tuesday to celebrate the groundbreaking for a planned stadium expansion. While only the Seattle Sounders (42,238) average more fans than Toronto (22,591), there were plenty of empty seats at the last home game -- a 2-0 loss to Philadelphia -- despite the announced full house. And a 5-6-2 record at home isnt much of an incentive to show up or buy a seat in an expanded stadium. That may have prompted Bradley to speak up this week, urging fans to get behind the team in the final stretch. But Avila says a fervent Toronto crowd may also spur on Chivas. "To be able to play away, I think the atmosphere and all that, it helps us out even more. And to try to take some points away from some teams, it satisfies for sure," he said. While Toronto is running out of games, with just six left after the weekend, Bradley says he sees a change in attitude. He points to the teams fightback in Chicago last weekend, a 1-1 tie that would have been a 2-1 win for Toronto had it not be for a controversial refereeing decision in the 90th minute. "From the players standpoint, Saturday was, I think, a turning point," said Bradley. "Just in the sense of coming off a few negative results, it would have been easy especially at the end of that game to think You know what, this is just another one of these nights where its not going to happen. "The commitment and the determination on our end to be relentless until the last second, I think we set the bar for ourselves." Chivas, meanwhile, will be eliminated from playoff contention if it loses to Toronto and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat the Portland Timbers on Saturday. NOTES -- Chivas holds a 9-2-1 all-time edge over Toronto ... Like Vanney, Torontos assistant coaches have ties to Chivas. Nick Theslof, Dan Calichman and Jim Liston all worked at Chivas in the past while Jon Conway played there in 2009. Toronto forward Luke Moore also had a brief stint with the Goats earlier this season ... Torontos Bradley and Justin Morrow face suspension with their next yellow card. Edmonton Conference Finalists: Chicago-Los Angeles and Boston-Pittsburgh Cup Finalists: Chicago-Boston Cup Winner: Chicago Blackhawks AWARDS Hart: Sidney Crosby Rocket Richard: Steven Stamkos Art Ross: Sidney Crosby Norris: Drew Doughty Vezina: Henrik Lundqvist Calder: Jonathan Drouin Adams: Jon Cooper THE OVERS AND THE UNDERS Some pre-season point totals that could provide value (at least to my eyes): Boston Bruins under 108.5 – I’m still high on the Bruins, but last season was the only one in the past five that they finished at better than 109-point pace. St. Louis Blues over 105.5 – The last two full seasons, the Blues had 109 and 111 points. High totals leave little margin for error, or injuries, but Blues can push 110 again. Dallas Stars over 95.5 – This one relies on projection, because the Stars haven’t had at least 96 points in a year since 2007-2008, but adding Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky should give them at least a five-point improvement over last year. Philadelphia Flyers under 90.5 – The Flyers tend to fluctuate up and down and have fallen under a 90-point pace three times in the past eight seasons. They probably need strong goaltending to get over 90, so this depends on confidence in Steve Mason who has, admittedly, played well since arriving in Philadelphia. Winnipeg Jets over 82.5 – This may only apply if the Jets get adequate goaltending, but they’ve only finished at an 82-point-or-below pace once in the past five seasons and they have enough good young players that they should improve. Ottawa Senators over 81.5 – Trying to compete on a budget is never easy, and the Senators won’t score so easily now that Spezza is gone, but they’ve come under an 81-point pace once in the past 16 seasons. Carolina Hurricanes under 80.5 – I can only presume that this line (or something nearby) was set before the Hurricanes lost Jordan Staal and, for the time being, Jeff Skinner to injuries. They’ve been at a pace of 80-points-or-fewer twice in the past five seasons and they look like legitimate Connor McDavid candidates. Calgary Flames over 73.5 – With questionable goaltending, the Flames managed 77 points last year, and the lockout season was the only year since 2000-2001 that Calgary finished under a 74-point pace. FANTASY PICKS I have drafted (or auctioned) three teams in deep leagues, with varying rules and requirements. He was 6-17 with a 5.86 ERA last season. Arizona could use some pitching help. The Diamondbacks lost ace Patrick Corbin to Tommy John surgery before the season started and are off to the worst start in franchise history, though the starters have been solid the past four games. Tepesch, back from the minor leagues, earned his first major league victory in more than 10 months and the Rangers edged the Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Wednesday. NEW ORLEANS -- Jrue Holiday saw a late 12-point deficit as an opportunity to deliver a character-building message. Fans had started filing out of the New Orleans Arena, the Pelicans were gathered at their bench for a timeout with 4:44 left, and Holiday told his young teammates: "Its time to grow." New Orleans then outscored Cleveland 23-7 the rest of the way en route to 104-100 victory Friday night. "Theres going to be plenty of times, plenty of games where were going to be down like that, but it was time for us to grow, grow together," said Holiday, who had 15 points and 11 assists. "Everybody kind of responded to that and picked up their defence. Everybody took their defensive assignments to heart." Anthony Davis had 17 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for New Orleans. Eric Gordon scored 19, including a 3-pointer from the corner with 31 seconds left to give New Orleans the lead for good. Clevelands Kyrie Irving, who had 22 points, drove for a potential tying layup with 23 seconds left, but lost the ball as he collided with Davis. As the Pelicans Tyreke Evans corralled the loose ball, Irving took off his protective face mask in disgust, certain he was fouled. After the game, however, Irving refused to blame the loss on that play. "We had a chance in the fourth quarter. We gave ourselves a chance," he said. "Theres a couple things weve got to get better at." Evans and Holiday combined to make four free throws in the final 20 seconds to secure New Orleans third straight win. Cleveland coach Mike Brown hoped his young team would learn from its collapse. "Its a tough loss, especially when you feel like you had control most of the game," Brown said. "But its a growing, learning experience for a young group." The Cavs led 93-81 with 4:44 to go after Earl Clarks third 3-pointer of the second half capped what appeared to be a decisive 9-2 run. New Orleans coach Monty Williams responded with a lineup featuring his five top scorers: Gordon, Holiday, Davis, Evans and Ryan Anderson. "Thats a tough lineup because everyone is capable of scoring," Davis said. What resulted was a 14-2 run that included 3s by Holiday and AAnderson, as well as six points by Davis on a dunk, free throws and a tip-in of Evans miss on a fast break to tie it at 95 with 1:29 to go. Stan Smith Scontate. "All our guys, instead of separating, came together," said Williams, who unleashed an emphatic fist pump as the horn sounded. "We know we can come back. We know we can play in close games. ... It was emotional." Evans finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds, including a clutch layup on a baseline drive with 1:01 left. Anderson had 13 points and Jason Smith 11. Jarrett Jack scored 19 points and Dion Waiters added 14 for Cleveland, which led most of the way. Tristan Thompson added 12 points and Clark 11. New Orleans managed to pull out the win despite being badly outshot, 53.2 per cent (41 of 77) to 40.9 per cent (36 of 88). The Pelicans made up for it with a 48-37 rebounding advantage, including 19 offensive rebounds that led to 25 second-chance points. The Pelicans also converted 20 Cavs turnovers into 21 points. "Where the game was lost was 20 turnovers," Brown said. "On the road, you have 20 turnovers for 21 points, thats tough." Waiters scored all his points in the opening half. Jack, who once played for New Orleans, made a running, off-balance 21-footer at the horn to give Cleveland a 51-42 halftime lead. The Cavs led by as many as 11 in the third quarter on Thompsons hook shot. Later in the period, New Orleans briefly surged back in front with a 12-0 run that began with Evans 3 and ended with Andersons 3. But a 3-pointer by Clark and Jacks driving floater in the paint helped Cleveland take a 71-70 lead heading into the final quarter. NOTES: Undrafted rookie Matthew Dellavadova got his first career start in place of C.J. Miles, who did not make the trip because of a right calf strain. Dellavadova did not score. He had one assist and two rebounds in about 12 minutes of playing time. ... Cavaliers rookie Anthony Bennett, the top overall pick in last summers draft, was healthy and active but did not get into the game. ... New Orleans has won four straight at home. ... Montgomerie failed to win in 71 PGA Tour majors and four Champions Tour majors until May, when he won the Senior PGA Championship. Now, he has won two of his past three majors to become just the fifth golfer to win both the Senior PGA Championship and U.S. Senior Open in the same year. The 51-year-old said he has become more patient with age. "You have to play intelligent golf, and I think Ive matured enough to realize that and play more within myself sometimes, including today -- to play away from some pins so you dont make bogies, and you realize that in major golf, pars are usually good enough, especially in the USGA events," he said. Montgomerie reached another milestone by winning his first professional playoff in nine tries. Most famously, he lost to Ernie Els at the 1994 U.S. Open and to Steve Elkington in sudden death at the 1995 PGA Championship. "Ive been close in these USGA championships a couple of times," he said. "Ive lost in a playoff and been one shot behind a couple of times, and you have to wait to (over age) 50 to finally win one." On the 18th hole of regulation, Montgomerie parred, then waited. Sauers second shot landed about 10 feet from the hole, giving him a chance to win the tournament with a birdie. His putt lipped out, and he parred to force the playoff. "I guess I just may have misread that putt the first time around, didnt play enough break," Sauers said. "Hit a good putt, broke right at the hole at the last second." Montgomerie led at the end of the first and second days of the Senior Open, but entered Sundays action four shots behind Sauers. He shot a 2-under 69 to force the playoff and now feels he is capable of playing just as well on the PGA Tour. "My golf is as good as it was in the 90s, when I was No. 2 in the world," he said. "It really is. I cant see any difference between that." Montgomerie and Sauers entered the playoff at 5 under. Montgomerie entered the third extra hole with a one-shot lead, then sank a putt on 18 to par the hole and claim the win. It was the first playoff at a U.S. Senior Open since 2002, when Don Pooley beat Tom Watson in a five-hole playoff. This one was held in temperatures that exceeded 100 degrees. Sauers often used a towel to wipe his face and at times rolled it and placed it on the back of his neck. Montgomeries face was red from the sun, and he carried a towel to the interview podium while still sweating well after he made his final putt. "For my wife and three kids to be here is fantastic, and Im just sorry for them," Montgomerie said. "It was very hot for them to walk around. They had to walk 21 holes today. Eighteen is enough." David Frost and Woody Austin, making his Champions Tour debut, tied for third at 1 under. Jeff Sluman, Vijay Singh and Marco Dawson tied for fifth at even par. Bernhard Langer, who was among the leaders for most of the tournament and entered the final day at 4 under, faltered on the back nine. He double bogeyed 16 and finished at 6 over for the day and 2 over for the tournament, tied for ninth. Sauers performance was impressive, given his circumstances. He said a reaction to a wrongly prescribed medication several years ago caused Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a disorder that burned the skin on his arms and legs from the inside out. He got out of the hospital in June 2011 and eventually returned to the course. Sauers hadnt finished higher than 15th in a Champions Tour event this year, and hadnt won an event of any kind since the 2002 Air Canada Championship on the PGA Tour. He has never won a major on the Champions or PGA tours, but he was thankful to be close. "Im glad to be able to be here to play with my friends again," he said. "Im glad to be here and Im coming back. I feel good about my game, and theres always next week." Air Jordan 1 Uomo Saldi . "Im not even that added up," the 39-year-old Australian replied. And to the Hall of Famers surprise, when all the math was done Sunday in the JTBC Founders Cup, she was the one posing for pictures with the big trophy. MONTREAL -- With veteran Henry Burris at quarterback, maybe the Ottawa Redblacks wont be quite the pushovers most expansion clubs have been. Burris threw for 247 yards in one half of a game -- on pace for a nearly 500-yard outing -- as the Redblacks downed the woeful Montreal Alouettes 26-10 in CFL pre-season play Friday night at Percival Molson Stadium. Former Hamilton Tiger-Cat Chevon Walker ran in two touchdowns and caught a five-yard pass for another to lead the Redblacks, who will be on a bye when the regular season opens next weekend and wont make their debut until July 3 in Winnipeg. "We knew we had to play well," said Burris, who signed as a free agent with Ottawa. "The fact that we dont play next week, we had to have a good feeling coming out of this game because now we have a few days off. "We know we made an improvement from last week (a 21-17 loss at Saskatchewan) and we wanted to carry the momentum of playing good football into the Winnipeg game in a couple of weeks." Brett Maher added a fourth-quarter field goal for Ottawa when Thomas DeMarco was in at quarterback. The Ottawa defence held Montreal without a touchdown, although some of that had to do with Troy Smiths struggles to find his receivers. Delbert Alvarado had a pair of field goals and Sean Whyte had another for Montreal, which went 0-2 in the pre-season under new coach Tom Higgins, and looked shaky on both sides of the ball heading into their season opener June 28 in Calgary. "It was definitely a pre-season game," said Smith, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner who has the tall order of replacing future Hall of Famer Anthony Calvillo as the Alouettes starting quarterback. "You understand things arent going to be as good as you want them to be all the time. "We did some positive things, we just werent able to capitalize on any drives." The less-than sellout crowd of 18,141 got their first look at former NFL star Chad (Ochocinco) Johnson, who is on a comeback after last having played in 2011. He made a 13-yard catch on the Alouettes first play from scrimmage but that was all. "Hopefully the timing with the guys will get better," said Smith. "Youve got to give Ottawa some credit. They played defence and came out with the win. Its very premature. Were embarking on something great. I can feel it in my bones. Scarpe Air Jordan 1 Outlet. But you have to go through trials and tribulations." A lot of Ottawa players made it difficult for coach Rick Campbell to make his final cuts on Saturday, when all nine CFL teams have to trim rosters to 46 players. Burris had six players make at least two catches, while the defence held Montreal to 290 yards in net offence. "When the decisions are easy, its not good," said Campbell. "We had some guys make some big plays, but it is a pre-season game. Well watch film and evaluate it. "Were not going to pat ourselves on the back too much. Well get back to work and try to get better." Burris couldnt get a first down on Ottawas first three possessions, but adjustments were made. Then he couldnt be stopped the rest of the first half. He completed 17 of 22 passes, all against Montreals first-string defence. The Redblacks led 22-7 at the intermission. Smith completed nine of 17 for 122 yards in the opening 30 minutes and gave way to the equally ineffective Tanner Marsh early in the second half. Alex Brink also saw action. The Alouettes got on the board first with Alvarados punt single, but then Burris threw 28 yards to Dobson Collins to set up Walkers three-yard TD 12:16 into the game. Montreal answered with a field goal, but Kierrie Johnsons 36-yard catch to the Montreal one set up Walkers second TD of the night 44 seconds into the second quarter. Just before the intermission, Burris led an eight-play 85-yard drive capped by Walkers five-yard TD catch. With second and third stringers on in the second half, neither team was able to move the ball very far and spectators were streaming out by the end of the third quarter. Unusually for the pre-season game, there were relatively few penalties called and there were no fumbles or interceptions. Last week, Montreal blew a lead in a 28-23 setback at Hamilton. Their bright spots were Alvarados powerful kicking and some long returns by Larry Taylor, who returned to Montreal from Calgary in the off-season. Notes: The Alouettes were missing running backs Brandon Whitaker (sore leg) and Tyrell Sutton (hamstring). Their replacement Brandon Rutley had a quiet game 29 yards on nine carries. Linebacker Kyries Hebert didnt dress, but he has returned to practice after suffering a concussion June 7. ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Stitched NCAA Jerseys .ca. Hello Kerry, After watching Nino Niederreiter clobber Alex Burrows with an open-ice hit on Wednesday, do you think he should have gotten more than the two minutes for interference. He got him in the head with his shoulder!   Thanks,Gary Gary: While I do not like the contact that Nino Niederreiter delivered to the head of Alexandre Burrows one bit, a two-minute penalty was about all the refs could assess on this play under the rules. A more meaningful and deserved penalty to Niederreiter should come his way via a Player Safety Committee review of this illegal check to the head. I watched Mike Milburys take on this play during the NBC intermission of the Rangers-Flyers game last night. Mike didnt agree with the "interference" call since the puck had just left Burrows stick. Beyond that, Milburys comments relative to the Niederreiter hit included, "I dont mind it. I think its more than 2 minutes he should have got." (Which I interpret as no penalty was deserved in Mikes opinion.)I completely agree with one element of Mike Milburys assessment on this play; it was not interference! Nino Niederreiter however should be held accountable for the significant contact he delivered with his shoulder cap to the head of Alex Burrows from the side; which by the way I believe was avoidable. For ongoing player safety this hit, and all similar in nature, need to be regarded as an illegal check to the head in violation of rule 48.2—on a hit resulting in contact with an opponents head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable. That can only happen if those responsible for doling out punishment interpret the rule verbiage, "main point of contact" to mean "significant" contact to the head coupled with some/secondary contact with the body. Alexandre Burrows lowered his posture to reach for a puck through the neutral zone. After gaining puck possession Burrows straightened to an upright body position, glided a couple of feet and then released the puck. Nino Niederreiter approached from the side angle position with his skates in a glide and his posture coiled (knees bent and flexed) to deliver a body check that would appear at, least through this setup, to make contact squarely through Burrows body. Just prior to delivering the hit Niederreiter stiffened his legs, thereby elevating his posture significantly upwards towards the head of Burrows. From this strike position, Niederreiter slipped his body just off the center line of Burrows and continued to elevate his shoulder that made significant contact with the head of Alex Burrows. The contact delivered off the center body line and to the head of Burrows resulted in a helicopter freefall for the Vancouver Canuck player. I doubt very much we would even be talking about this play if Nino Niederreiter had maintained a lowered and flexed posture from the setup and approach through contact of his intended hit on Alexandre Burrows. Like most players however, Neiderrreiter made the dangerous decision to increase velocity through the hit by straightening with an upward drive of his legs and shoulder cap that had no other place to connect than the head area of his opponent. Rule 48.1 (i) (ii) (iii) provides lots of reasons to determine whether contact with an opponents head was avoidable. Practically all of these allowances place considerable onus on the recipient/victim of the hit. From (iii) Alexandre Burrows did not "materially change the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact." The material change in position came from Nino Niederreiter. If the rule verbiage doesnt qualify hits of this nature as a "head pick," at the very least it needs to be acknowledged that significant contact resulted from an illegal hit to the head in an ongoing effort to hold players accountable. DENVER -- Mark Trumbo homered for the fourth straight game, and the Arizona Diamondbacks averted a sweep by beating Colorado 5-3 on Sunday. Wade Miley pitched eight strong innings to extend his mastery over the Rockies. He also had a career-best three hits, including an RBI single and benefited from a defence that turned five double plays as the Diamondbacks won for just the second time in nine games this season. Miley improved to 7-0 with a 2.52 ERA in 10 career games (nine starts) against the Rockies, matching the longest winning streak against Colorado to start a career. The winning pitcher in Arizonas only other victory this season, Miley (2-1) allowed two runs and seven hits. Addison Reed gave up a leadoff single to Carlos Gonzalez in the ninth and Gonzalez stole second and went to third on catcher Miguel Monteros throwing error. Troy Tulowitzki walked to put runners on the corners. But Reed induced Wilin Rosario to ground into a run-scoring double play and then got Nolan Arenado to fly out to left for his second save in as many chances. Trumbo, who walked in his first two plate appearances, connected off Brett Anderson (0-2) for his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fifth that sailed into the left field bleachers and stretched Arizonas lead to 5-0. Anderson went six innings and allowed five runs and 10 hits. Colorado got on the scoreboard with sacrifice flies by Drew Stubbs in the fifth and Arenado in the sixth. A rare error by Arenado, last seasons Gold Gloove winner at third base, opened the door to a pair of unearned runs for the Diamondbacks in the third inning. Cheap Basketball NCAA Jerseys. SEATTLE -- Collin McHugh didnt know he was starting Tuesday until late the night before. Wholesale Nike Blazer . When he took the mound, he surprised just about everyone with his performance. McHugh struck out a career-high 12 in his season debut to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-2 win against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night, extending Seattles losing streak to eight games. McHugh (1-0) was told he was being called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday and flew to Seattle. It wasnt until he got to the team hotel late Monday night that he found out he was going to start for the Astros on Tuesday. Before the game, Houston coach Bo Porter characterized McHugh as a "pitch to contact guy," but the Mariners made almost no contact. McHugh struck out the first three batters he faced to set the tone for his first win in 10 career starts. "That was outstanding. Thats what you call seizing the opportunity," Porter said. The right-hander didnt walk a batter, giving up three hits in 6 2-3 shutout innings. "I dont think anybody prepares to go out and strike out a bunch of people. But I knew I had pretty decent command today with two or three pitches," McHugh said. "It was really good to kind of get the proverbial gorilla off your back with a W." McHughs stuff caught the Mariners off guard as well, as they only reached second once against him. "He was a little different than the scouting report we got. He was 94 (miles an hour) with a pretty good cut slider," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He threw exceptionally well tonight." The Astros offence gave McHugh plenty to work with, as Jason Castro and Chris Carter each hit homers to give Houston a 3-0 lead after two innings. Seattle starter Erasmo Ramirez (1-3) struck out eight over six innings and only allowed three hits, but they included the two costly homers. Three at-bats into the game, Castro just cleared the left field wall for a two-run homer, his fourth. Carter followed in the second inning with a shot to left that landed in the second deck for his first homer of the year. Seattles Dustin Ackley tried to counter with a deep ball to left in the bottom of the second, but Matt Dominguez made a leaping catch at the wall to end the inning. Dominguez added a homer of his own in the top of the seventh to give Houston a 4-0 lead. The Astros have now won two in a row after a seven-game losing streak, and their offence -- which entered Tuesdays game with a major league-worst .196 batting average -- is finally showing some signs of life. "Once the whole offence is flowing like it is the last couple games, you kind of get in a little groove with it," Dominguez said. "Its been nice being able to score some runs." McHughs 12th strikeout came against Robinson Cano to leadoff the bottom of the seventh, but Porter brought on reliever Raul Valdes with two outs in the inning. McHugh had thrown 89 pitches, well above his high of 73 pitches in his minor league outings this year. Valdes walked Kyle Seager and then gave up a two-run home run to Justin Smoak, Seattles only offence of the game. McHughs call up came after Scott Feldman was placed on the disabled list with biceps tendinitis. Feldman will miss at least one more start, possibly giving McHugh more chances to show what he can do. "He didnt do anything to hurt his chances of sticking around," Porter said. "He definitely earned his keep." NOTES: The crowd of 10,466 was the fifth-lowest in Safeco Field history. Six of the seven lowest crowds at Safeco have been matchups with the Astros, all coming since the start of last season. ... Seattle RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) was scheduled to pitch in a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma, but instead threw a simulated game at Safeco Field on Tuesday afternoon due to weather concerns. NASHVILLE -- The Pittsburgh Penguins sent forward James Neal to the Nashville Predators on Friday in exchange for forwards Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling. The addition of Neal signals the Predators emphasis on boosting their offence under new coach Peter Laviolette as they attempt to return to the playoffs after a two-year absence. The Predators have had a reputation as a defence-oriented team for virtually the franchises entire history. The 26-year-old Neal had 27 goals and 34 assists in 59 games for the Penguins this season, which marked the sixth straight year he scored at least 20 goals. Neal scored 40 goals in 2011-12 and had 21 goals in only 40 games during the 2012-13 season. He has 161 career goals and 154 assists in 413 career regular-season games, and has been a force on power plays. Neal had been with the Penguins since 2010 after beginning his career with the Dallas Stars. Hornqvist, 27, had 22 goals and 31 assists in 76 games this season, which marked the fourth time in his career he reached the 20-goal mark. Nike Blzer Cheap. He has 106 goals and 110 assists in 363 career regular-season games, all with Nashville. Hornqvists best season came in 2009-10, when he scored a career-high 30 goals. "In this deal, we got to drop our cap a little bit with Hornqvist," Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said. "We like Hornqvist as an all-around player. Hornqvist plays at the net, goes to the net, works the corners. We like his all-around play." Spaling, 25, had 13 goals and 19 assists in 71 games for Nashville this season. He has 40 goals and 44 assists in 207 career regular-season games. "We like Spalding, he can play all three positions on the third line," Rutherford said. "I think we were just trying to change the mix of our team a little bit and get a little different type player." ' ' '

Austin, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Cliff Alexander led four Jayhawks in double figures with 15 points and No. 11 Kansas played a clean second half to take down 17th-ranked Texas 75-62 for a key road victory that could help determine the Big 12 regular season. Perry Ellis and Brannen Greene scored 14 points apiece and Frank Mason III had 12 for Kansas, which committed all three of its season-low three turnovers in the first half. Alexander scored all of his points and grabbed all nine of his rebounds in the final 21:54 of the game. We worked the middle, he said. Thats what coach told us, Just get the ball to the middle, its open every time. Thats what we did, just got the ball to the middle and got easy shots. Kansas (16-3, 5-1 Big 12) has won two straight since dropping a road game against Iowa State. The Jayhawks have won or held a share of a remarkable 10 straight Big 12 regular-season crowns, but many believed Texas had a chance to threaten that run this season. Isaiah Taylor had 23 points to pace the Longhorns (14-5, 3-3), who have dropped three of their last five games. It did feel like we let just a couple (of possessions) get away from us, said Taylor. They beat us to loose balls, they got in transition some, got offensive rebounds and just hit open shots. They came out and played man (defense) the second half and I mean, we tried to respond to it, but we couldnt respond fully. Texas opened the game with an 11-2 run, but 3-pointers from Wayne Selden and Greene on consecutive possessions before the first media timeout had Kansas right back in the game. Mason assisted on both 3s. Greene then scored five straight during a 9-0 run as Kansas climbed in front. Cameron Ridley netted five in a row to tie the game at 28 late in the first half, but Alexander answered with a pair of dunks and Kansas led 32-30 at halftime. Myles Turner hit a jumper 5 1/2 minutes into the second half, giving the Longhorns a 44-39 lead, but it quickly disappeared. Alexander threw down a jam on a feed from Perry Ellis, then kicked out to Selden for a 3 from the left wing. Greene followed with another triple, and the Jayhawks led by three. It was 53-50 with seven minutes to play when Greenes well-contested 3-ball from the corner sparked a 9-2 burst that just about put the game out of reach. MONTREAL -- Canadian light welterweight Dierry Jean will likely get his first shot at a world title in late January in New York, promoter Camille Estaphan said Tuesday. Nike Running Shoes Clearance . Jean (25-0), of Montreal, is to face International Boxing Federation champion Lamont Peterson (31-2-1), whose promoter Golden Boy won a purse bid to stage the bout. Estaphan said Golden Boy, which still has seven days to set a date, is looking at having the fight at the Barclays Center in New York, although Las Vegas remains an option. "New York would be better because more of my fans can come," said Jean. "I see Peterson as a beatable opponent. "Hes a good boxer, but I wouldnt call him a complete athlete. He has shown some weaknesses in his career." Estaphan, head of Eye of the Tiger Management, said Montreal heavyweight Bermane Stiverne may also get a title shot in 2014. He said he was assured by handlers of WBC champion Vitali Klitschko that the Ukrainians next bout will be a mandatory title defence against Stiverne, possibly in April. If so, it could be a busy time for the 42-year-old Klitschko, who is a member of parliament in Ukraine and recently announced he will run for president. "When a representative of Klitschkos company approaches you with a proposition, its a sign that things are moving forward," said Estaphan, who returned this week from a WBC congress in Bangkok. He also said that Montreal light welterweight Ghislain Maduma, currently ranked fourth, will have an elimination bout to try to become mandatory challenger for the WBC belt. "Not only could we have three world title fights in 2014, but we could have three world champions from Quebec," Estaphan said. The only Canadian currently holding a world title is Adonis Stevenson of Montreal, who will defend his WBC light heavywight belt Nov. 30 in Quebec City. Eye of the Tiger also announced it has added welterweight contender Antonin Decarie to its stable. Decarie was previously with Stevensons promoter Yvon Michel. "The offence played great, they brought their A game." Samardzija has a 1.45 ERA, but is 0-3. The Cubs have totalled 15 runs in his eight starts. Lake homered and doubled twice for Chicago, which had lost seven of eight overall. The Cubs totalled just four runs while getting swept in a three-game series at Atlanta over the weekend -- Emilio Bonifacio scored five times himself in this romp. "Thats what we needed," Lake said. "Just play hard and something happened good." Chicago has the worst record in the league at 13-24, but is 4-3 against the defending NL champions. The Cardinals were forced to finish with infielder Daniel Descalso as a relief pitcher getting the final out in the ninth. Its the first time St. Louis used a position player to pitch since Rob Johnson against the Dodgers in a 13-4 loss at home Aug. 7. "Its embarrassing to have to put him into that spot," manager Mike Matheny said. "Hes a team guy and understands, but should have never been in that spot to begin with." "Its tough for all of us to watch." The Cubs hit for the cycle in the first five batters -- Bonifacio doubled, Anthony Rizzo singled, Starlin Castro tripled and Mike Olts two-run homer capped a four-run first inning. Bonifacio had four of Chicagos 20 hits and scored a career-best five times -- the most in the majors this season -- once on a play overturned by video review. Rizzo and Castro each drove in three as the Cubs set season highs for runs and hits. Cardinals reliever Randy Choate gave up a career-worst six runs in the ninth and left with two outs. Descalso made his first pro pitching appearance and retired the only batter he faced, getting Oltt on a fly ball. Cheap Nike Running Shoes. "I just went out there and did what they asked me to do," Descalso said. "I really dont want to talk about this." Wood (3-4) beat St. Louis for the second time in three starts despite giving up five runs in six innings. He hit two batters in the fifth and both scored. Tyler Lyons (0-3) surrendered nine runs in four innings in his fourth start in place of injured Joe Kelly. "I felt a lot better the first two innings than I did in the third and fourth," Lyons said. "Its just one of those things. Sometimes you just get hit, I guess." Allen Craig drove in two runs for the Cardinals. Yadier Molina had two hits, an RBI and a steal when he caught Wood napping in the fifth and took third without a throw. Lake hit a three-run homer in the second for a 7-0 lead. He had an RBI double in the fourth and a two-run double in the ninth. Lake began the game with eight RBIs in 92 at-bats this season. Three of his four homers have come against the Cardinals. "Hes electric, for sure," Wood said. "When hes on, hes on. Hes got tremendous pop and nice to see it come out." Olt leads NL with eight homers, including four in the last six games, all on the road. In the fourth, Bonifacio was called out at the plate when he tried to score on Rizzos grounder to short with the infield in. The Cubs challenged the call, and the ruled was reversed. NOTES: The Cubs previous bests for runs and hits came at Comiskey Park on Thursday when they scored 12 runs on 15 hits against the White Sox. ...
